Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Energy Minister AK Sharma strongly criticised the Opposition for repeatedly disrupting proceedings during the third session of the state Assembly and Legislative Council, calling the approach contrary to democratic traditions.
Speaking amid protests in the House, Sharma highlighted the government’s achievements in the power sector. He said more than 1.5 lakh hamlets that had remained without electricity for decades have now been connected to the power network. He also claimed Uttar Pradesh has set national records by successfully meeting the country’s highest electricity demand.
Sharma said the government is strengthening the energy sector through new substations, transformer capacity enhancement, distribution-system modernisation and promotion of renewable energy.
Speaking to the media after the proceedings, Sharma accused the Opposition of wasting three days through slogans and disruptions instead of raising issues concerning public welfare. He praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister and the Assembly Speaker for ensuring that legislative business was completed despite the disruptions.
He said the successful passage of the supplementary budget demonstrated the government’s commitment to development and public welfare. Sharma stressed that a constructive Opposition should engage in healthy debate, meaningful dialogue and cooperation on matters affecting citizens.
He added that people assess governments and political parties on development, good governance and welfare, and would respond democratically at the appropriate time.
